Traditional teaching

Three separate 'types' of percent problems, each with its own formula: find the part, find the whole, find the percent. Students memorize is-over-of, apply it blindly, and panic the moment a problem doesn't announce its type.

The Alice Method

One idea, no types: percent means per hundred, and it exists to make unfair comparisons fair. 17 out of 20 versus 41 out of 50 — who did better? Rescale both to 'out of 100' and the answer is instant. Teach benchmarks (10% is one-tenth; 5% is half of that; 15% is both together) so a child can tip, discount, and sanity-check mentally.

Percent rescales every comparison to the same 100-unit ruler. Any 'percent problem' is just the question: if this situation were out of 100, what would the numbers be? One mental move replaces three formulas.

Normalizing to a common base is a core data-literacy skill: per-capita statistics, interest rates, battery indicators, poll results. It's also the first line of defense against being misled — '50% more!' of what, exactly? A percent-fluent child asks for the whole.

The misconception

A 50% increase then a 50% decrease gets you back where you started.

Percent always acts on the current whole. 100 → 150 → 75. The whole changed mid-story; this single example inoculates kids against a lifetime of financial fine print.

A 300% increase is perfectly meaningful — three extra rulers' worth. Percents over 100 confuse only students who think of percent as 'part of a pie' instead of a rescaling.
