A wall of symbol-manipulation: combine like terms, isolate x, FOIL. Presented as rules about moving letters around, algebra reads as arbitrary — and 'when will I use this?' becomes unanswerable because the point was never stated.

The Alice Method
Algebra is the language for saying something true about every number at once. Start with patterns: staircase 1 needs 4 blocks, staircase 2 needs 7, staircase 3 needs 10… what does staircase 100 need? The child who says 'triple it and add one' has done algebra; 3n + 1 is just shorthand for what they said. Equations become balance puzzles — do the same thing to both sides because the scale must stay level.

An equation is a statement that two pans balance. Every legal move keeps them level: add to both, halve both, remove the same thing from both. 'Solve for x' means simplify the scale until x sits alone on one pan. Nothing is being 'moved across' — that phrasing is where sign errors are born.

Variables are the first abstraction machine: name the unknown thing, then reason about it anyway. That's how programmers write functions, scientists write laws, and businesses write models. Generalizing from cases to a rule — then trusting the rule on cases you've never seen — is the core of all technical work.

Years of 3 + 4 = ▢ train this. But = asserts balance, not sequence. Children with the 'answer' reading can't make sense of 5 = x − 2. Fix it early: write equations backwards sometimes.

A variable is a number in disguise, not a thing. '3a' means three times some number — not three apples. The 'a for apples' shortcut is why students later write nonsense like a + b = ab.
